I am like the cat that got the cream. That evil harridan, that emissary of the dark side has faced those that she torments, and has been lambasted. In the scheme of things it will not affect her decisions, but at least, for us poor minions, there is a primitive pleasure in her temporary discomfort . Well done you nurses.

Amy is lovely. A little butterball who is full of mischief and cheekiness. Today we had a wonderful day, we just did the usual, supermarket shop, walk this afternoon, but she was an absolute pleasure. She has been saying the usual - Mummum, Dada, Nan, Grandad, Ta, Duck for a while now but today she was calling 'Jack', saying 'down' when she had finished lunch, and then when she slammed the cupboard door, for the 20th time, and knocked a mug over, said 'Oh Dear'. She is growing up so quickly, baby to toddler in the blink of an eye.

I'm spending much of my 'reflective time' considering what to do with the rest of my working life. I often do this, but I do have to say that my deliberations have become more serious over the last year. When I'm at work, I love my job but I am finding it harder and harder to cope with the bureaucracy, and that is fast becoming a much larger part of my working day. It is all clouding my thinking so much now that I feel a 'break' might be a good idea, finances would be a problem though so any suggestions regarding a viable career change would be well received. Thank heavens I'm off to a conference for two days next week, that should re-energise me and lift my spirits. I usually leave these occasions feeling positive about midwifery so I'm pining my hopes on the recuperative powers of this meeting of the sisterhood (Hubby's description of a group of midwives).

I reckon you would have a shining career as a writer and broadcaster advising on midwife/preganancy related matters....in fact, the more I think of it you would be IDEAL. Just a thought.

If you're on a roll with getting even with hospital/nursey political crap may I suggest that you stick around and give them all you've got? It's about time there was decent challenge to all that stuff! And I think that you can rise to the challenge!

Could you not just do the bit you like (midwifery) but on a self employed basis? Not sure if there would be a demand for independant midwives round your patch but you never know.

Stroppy - I would love to be an independant midwife, and there is a market round here for that but.... the insurance is £10,000 per year, I could practice without but I wouldn't. Also, the local hospitals won't let independant midwives in so I could only offer homebirths. At the conference will be an independant midwife who asked me to work with her a few years ago, I will just speak to her and see if she has managed to find cheaper insurance.
AWTY - I do try to make inroads with the managers, but it is like banging your head against a concrete, reinforced wall, plus it's not soley down to them......politics. Thankyou for your belief in me though.
IanB - I would love to do that. Nearly had my chance last year with the online journal, but then the fire threw me off course and I lost the opening.

Don't give up on the idea of writing - I *know* you would be brilliant. Very funny about The Harridan Hewitt was forced to abandon speaking altogether. Nice move.

I admire your ability to be a midwife. Such a thankless job. I hope you stick with it as there are not enough to go around. I called to get a midwife when I was 4 weeks pregnant and they told me no, that there was not one available for my birth time. I was sooooooooooooo disappointed.
I hope you are able to work through this and love your job again!

mylozmom - In England the situation for midwives is different. A Mum would never be told there is not one available for when baby is due to be born. Midwives carry out the majority of the prenatal/postnatal care and at 68% of births midwives are the senior professional, Medics only become involved if we refer to them. Our problem is that the hospitals we work for do not employ enough of us, and those they do are employ are being told to take on larger and larger caseloads.

Mylozmum - I'll just run it past my manager and get the OK!
